Contrail by theRealPadster Contrail by theRealPadster
Contrail is a minimal theme based on Tobias Bernard's minimal GTK theme mockup, found here

Try the Contrail Metacity theme, too! (works with Mutter)
Also, I recommend this GTK theme based on the same mockup that Contrail was.

Thanks to Andrew King for suggesting the name!

Known bugs:
-When using the Activities hot-corner, it often stays in the hover state when switching back to the desktop. This is a problem with GNOME-Shell itself.

Changelog:

I will not be upgrading it for 3.6, I will skip it and release it for 3.8

So, GNOME 3.10 released, and I can forget about Contrail for gs 3.8?

Um... well... I had it almost ported, so I might as well finish it before updating to 3.10

If so, great! Because gnome 3.10 will be available in gentoo not earlier than 3.12 will be released =/

nope, they're different enough that it will not work exactly as intended.

Why do you want to use 3.6 instead of 3.8? 3.8 is much better.

Why fonts are not antialiased with this theme?

In the preview or? I didn't do anything special, they should be anti-aliased by default, no?

In the oreview it's ok. There's something wrong with font antialiasing on my system... Though, in browser and applications it's ok, so I don't know what's wrong...

Rebuilding and reconfiguring of freetype almost solved this problem. Though, in dark themes fonts look better anyway.

Go to extensions.gnome.org in Firefox (it has to be Firefox to use manage extensions) and search for "user-themes", install that extension. This lets you install custom themes. Then extract the archive you downloaded for the theme, and move the Contrail folder to your .themes folder in your home directory. Then open GNOME-Tweak-Tool and go to the themes section, and set Contrail as the shell theme.

hey Padster!

I have made a black-transparent mod of your theme, its here: [link]

I hope there isn't any problem with that :)
(I have credited you well in the theme.json and in that page)

P.S: aaaaaaaaaaaaaawesome theme man, its amazing!

Cool, thanks :)
Also, thanks for the GTK theme in your preview, didn't know someone already did a GTK theme based on the mockup this was based on. I was going to make a GTK theme once upon a time, now I don't have to :D

I've just tried this and I'm in love ^^
I wouldn't mind the keyboard from ACID or something though, the key colour is a bit too pale. Or maybe if the hover colour was the idle colour and have a new darker/coloured hover style.
Love. It.

Thanks! :D
It's got a very specific colour pallete, I don't think I can shift it all a shade darker :/
I could possibly make it shift lighter on hover, then lighter again on pressed, but that doesn't really fit the theme, either

Sickeningly this is exactly what I want from a theme. Just as I embark on redesigning an OS to suit my needs and upload some mockups, you make a theme that does it :P
This makes me want to install gnome-shell just for this. Would it work with cinnamon?

:icontherealpadster:
theRealPadster Featured By Owner Jul 7, 2012  Hobbyist Interface Designer
hehe.
gnome-shell themes are not compatible with cinnamon, but a port would be possible, I've seen that done before. I don't use Cinnamon, so I don't know how much work is involved in a port.

could you please make a version for Cinnamon? I'd be much obliged. I tried hacking it together but I can't figure out the css. Thanks in advance if you do decide to do this.

I don't use Cinnamon, don't know how to theme it, and have enough work to do updating my themes to 3.6 among other things. I asked my one friend who uses Cinnamon if they'd be interested in porting Contrail. I'll get back to you with the reply.

I can't say myself but I would assume that it's less work. Mainly because cinnamon uses less parts of gnome shell, just a couple of features of it. Thanks for making this real though, the concept you linked to on Google+ looked awesome.

Wish someone would do that for my ideas ;P
I think a highlight colour wouldn't hurt here or there, but I know that defeats the purpose of the original concept. Actually, just thinking it through it'd be cool if there was a highlight colour but the user could choose which colour. It's a too technical but it'd be awesome if a colour wheel popped up and they could choose. Maybe in the future lol.

Interesting idea, where would the highlight colour go?

Looking at it now, it's hard to say without finding it detracting from the minimalism. But I'd say definitely the music control buttons could be coloured, as well as say the volume meter and play progress with the amount before the slider being coloured and the bit after remaining grey. Also maybe the text on selected items and the square open application indicator behind the icons.
Yeah I like the Elegance Idea, very personalised.

I think I'm going to do a colourable version a la ctrl+f, so it's only got one colour. I can do the borders/shadows like in your mockup [link] and I'm working on it that way. Seems promising.

It's an interesting concept but maybe less isn't always more :)

Try this for the activities hover issue:
--
#panelActivities:overview {
background-gradient-direction: vertical;
background-gradient-start: rgba(255,255,255,0);
background-gradient-end: rgba(255,255,255,0);
} /* or: background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0); */
--

You lose hover effect from within the overview (where it's sort of unnecessary anyway) but it should do away with lingering hover effects after you've left overview mode.

Why not use just "transparent" instead of "rgba(255,255,255,0)"? Looks better :D
